In most accepted circles, there is really only one true September birthstones -- Sapphires. Also popular for many is Peridot.
Sapphire is one of the most versatile and favorite gems in the world. It is easy to acquire and comes in many striking and vivid colors. While
it holds these qualities; it is still in the "big four" of precious gems in the
world, (diamond, ruby and emerald (in that order) being the other).
As with many birthstones; its use can be traced back will into Ancient Times.
Shrouded in legend and lore; it was understood in early cultures that the world
itself rested upon a Sapphire; hence giving the sky its blue shade. Popular
through the Roman Empire, and into modern day royalty, it is not likely to lose
its luster soon. Found in many shades, though mainly blue representative
from the early morning right up to the darkest of midnight skies, it is thought
to have much significance and symbolic natures. Representative of purity, faith,
loyalty and wisdom, it is also reputed to be an excellent cure to many
illnesses.
It is also associated with both emotional and physical well being, and is said
to strengthen relationships and intimate partnerships. For this reason, it is
often given as a token of love and affection from a loved one to his or her
September born partner. That it can be set into wonderful items of jewelry it
really is no great surprise.
An alternative for September birthstones is the
Peridot. A green gem, that has a range from deep olives to light limes, it
is translucent in nature and delicately reflects the light making for an
impressive show.Again, its history can be traced back into the distant past; and
was used to help those suffering from possession. It was also given as a gift
where the receiver had to maintain purity of heart and spirit, and to this day
makes for wonderful gifts. Such is its delicate nature, Peridot can be set
into delicate rings, necklaces and bracelets and; it can work well with Sapphire
depending in the hues used and the precious metal the gems are set in.
Though these are the most popular September birthstones, (most certainly
Sapphire), there are suggestions that Agate too is significant. This could be
down to its growing popularity in general over recent years; but is an
exceptional gem with many qualities. Available in a range of colors, and said to
give strength, it could be just as suitable a gift as any other stone.
