Sagittarius Birthstones: November 23 - December 21There a 5 commonly associated Sagittarius birthstones; Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz and, of course, Turquoise. Here is a brief presentation of each, and what it is thought they represent.
Amethyst is a strain of quartz, which ranges from a pale lilac color to a rich and deep purple. The finest of all, which command an equally rare price tag, is the deepest of purples. Almost black, such is its depth of color; it has flashes of rose that give it a fiery nature. There are many legends surrounding Amethyst going back thousands of years; it is sacred in the Buddhist community; held in high regard in the Catholic Church and is said to have calming and protective qualities for the wearer.
Rubies are second only to diamonds in their hardness, have a price to match and thus make for the most decadent of all Sagittarius birthstones. Highly treasured for this very reason, their natural color, ranging from a clear red to a reddish purple hue, is often yearned for. Across the ages, the Ruby has been used to give energy and revitalize; often following battles and illness. Believed to also have mental health benefits, it is thought to heal the heart and give emotional direction.
Sapphires are found in an almost infinite number of colors. Said to be available in, "all colors of the Sky"; the most valued and sought after are an intense, royal blue. The entire range is beautiful though; from light and delicate blues, through sunrise yellows and sunset pinks; it is simply beautiful. In Ancient Persia; it was thought that the Earth rested on a huge Sapphire, which gave the sky its color and it has been cherished throughout many cultures. Thought through the years to be a preventative to bleeding, and able cure eye complaints; it is also thought by many to have protective powers.
Topaz is a very familiar stone for many, and is most often found in wonderful golden yellows. However, they can be found in many other colors such as oranges, reds and even pinks and blues. They are hard to find, and command a high fee. Quite where the name Topaz derives from is not really certain. However, the common school of thought suggests it is named after the island of Topazos in the Red Sea. Thought to have a wide array of curative powers, many claim it is even able to prevent death.
Turquoise is a stone steeped in culture and history. A wonderful sky blue or cool green stone; it has given its name to a popular shade of course. The most popular and widely respected of all the Sagittarius birthstones, Turquoise is thought to give balance and control. Also thought to bring good luck, it is a stone respected in almost all faiths, cultures and indigenous communities.
