Anniversary Gemstones

Historically, Emily Post is considered to be the first person to publish an etiquette guide on wedding anniversary gifts. Her first etiquette guide, published in 1922, contained a brief list of suggestions for the early years of marriage that were small remembrances, or tokens, such as 1st (paper), 5th (wood), and 10th (tin). In later years of matrimony, gifts gained value (in relation to social and professional status), including 15th (crystal), 20th (china), 25th (silver), and 50th (gold).

As time went on, the list was broadened by other authors to include gifts for every year from the first to the twenty-fifth, plus every five years through the 75th wedding anniversary. The chart below has been endorsed by the American Gem Trade Association, the Jewelers of America, the American Gem Society, and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This list differs from the Traditional and Modern lists in that it only includes gemstones and precious metals. The Alternates list was compiled from various books and internet sources and have little acceptance as suggested gifts but are listed here for completeness.
