What Is a Patina?

A patina is a term for a natural coloration that forms on metals when they are exposed to oxygen or certain chemicals. The reactions that cause a patina to form are similar to those that cause metals to oxidize or tarnish; however, in the case of patinated jewelry, the process is done intentionally under strict controls. In the John S. Brana Handmade Jewelry Muir Woods, the patinated earrings are made out of copper, which can be given a burgundy or green patina.

About Our Patinated Earrings

The patina featured in the designs of John S. Brana Handmade Jewelry Muir Woods earrings is meant to evoke the beauty of the natural forms seen in Muir Woods. The deep burgundies are reminiscent of autumn leaves, while the brown tones are a reminder of the rich colors of the powerful trunks of the towering redwood trees. The green-finished pieces are inspired by the redwoods’verdant leaves in spring and summer. The collection of patinated earrings includes two different types of designs. The first is the lily pad earring, which is folded and chased to transform the patinated copper into an organic shape. The second type is the tear drop earring, a classic shape that is reimagined in the collection. All of the earrings are dangle designs that include jump ring findings and French ear wires.
